🐉 When the Battle Feels Bigger Than You – But Not Bigger Than God

A Devotional Inspired by Job 41
By Rylan Isabella Wicker

Recently, I stared at my husband’s paycheck in disbelief. It was barely half of what it should have been—and the bills weren’t going to wait. I had already lost my own job, and though I stepped out in faith to start a business, I’m not seeing income yet. I've been applying for work, praying, pressing forward... but every door feels closed.

In the middle of that heartbreak and confusion, God led me to Job 41.

At first, I didn’t understand. This chapter describes a terrifying creature called Leviathan—fire-breathing, untamable, and unstoppable. It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel. But as I prayed, I realized: Leviathan is a picture of everything I’m facing right now.

The fear.
The financial pressure.
The uncertainty.
The sense that something dark and wild is trying to swallow my peace.

And I heard something deeper—something holy—beneath the noise:

“You’re not fighting this beast alone. In fact, you don’t have to fight it at all. I’m still God over it.”

💬 What Job 41 Teaches Us:

  1. Some battles are bigger than us—and that’s okay.
God doesn’t expect us to be stronger than the storm. He reminds us that He already is.

  2. God is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us.
Leviathan may look terrifying to us, but to God? He commands it. Controls it. Crushed it before—and can do it again.

  3. This isn’t the end of the story.
In Job 42, God restores everything Job lost and more. This suffering has an expiration date—and a redemptive purpose.

đŸ”„ Am I Being Tested?

Someone recently said to me, “Maybe God is allowing all this warfare to test your faith—because He knows you won’t turn away.”

At first, that was hard to hear. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized: maybe they’re right. Maybe God has allowed this season—not to punish me, but to prove the strength of the faith He’s been building in me.

Just like Job, maybe God is saying:

“Have you considered my daughter Rylan? Even in loss, she worships. Even in fear, she trusts. Even in disappointment, she doesn't walk away from Me.”

If you’re reading this and feel like you’re under fire too, let me say this clearly:

You’re not being punished. You’re being proven.

This may be one of the hardest battles you’ll ever fight, but it’s also where God is forging unshakable faith in you.

🙏 A Prayer for the Tested and Tired

Father, I don’t understand why this is happening, but I choose to trust You. If this is a Job season, give me Job’s perseverance. Let me worship while I wait. I surrender the things I can’t control, and I lay down my striving. Remind me that You rule over every Leviathan in my life. Refine me, anchor me, and keep me close to You. Even when the enemy comes against me, let him see me still standing, still praising, still Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

đŸȘž Reflection Questions

  • What are the “Leviathans” in your life right now—things that feel too big or wild to control?

  • Have you felt like you’re being tested? How can you shift from fear to trust in this season?

  • What would it look like to stop wrestling—and start resting in God’s sovereignty?

❀ You Are Not Alone

If you're feeling like life is spinning out of control and you're barely holding on, I want you to know: I see you. I'm with you. And God is still for you.

I don't have all the answers yet. I'm still in the middle of this. But I know this much: God is here. He is holy in the heartbreak, sovereign in the silence, and good even when life doesn’t feel good.

And if He’s allowing this test, it’s because He already knows—you won’t turn from Him. You’ll come out stronger, refined like gold, and testimony in hand.
