đ When the Battle Feels Bigger Than You â But Not Bigger Than God
A Devotional Inspired by Job 41
By Rylan Isabella Wicker
Recently, I stared at my husbandâs paycheck in disbelief. It was barely half of what it should have beenâand the bills werenât going to wait. I had already lost my own job, and though I stepped out in faith to start a business, Iâm not seeing income yet. I've been applying for work, praying, pressing forward... but every door feels closed.
In the middle of that heartbreak and confusion, God led me to Job 41.
At first, I didnât understand. This chapter describes a terrifying creature called Leviathanâfire-breathing, untamable, and unstoppable. It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel. But as I prayed, I realized: Leviathan is a picture of everything Iâm facing right now.
The fear.
The financial pressure.
The uncertainty.
The sense that something dark and wild is trying to swallow my peace.
And I heard something deeperâsomething holyâbeneath the noise:
âYouâre not fighting this beast alone. In fact, you donât have to fight it at all. Iâm still God over it.â
đŹ What Job 41 Teaches Us:
Some battles are bigger than usâand thatâs okay.
God doesnât expect us to be stronger than the storm. He reminds us that He already is.God is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us.
Leviathan may look terrifying to us, but to God? He commands it. Controls it. Crushed it beforeâand can do it again. This isnât the end of the story.
In Job 42, God restores everything Job lost and more. This suffering has an expiration dateâand a redemptive purpose.
đ„ Am I Being Tested?
Someone recently said to me, âMaybe God is allowing all this warfare to test your faithâbecause He knows you wonât turn away.â
At first, that was hard to hear. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized: maybe theyâre right. Maybe God has allowed this seasonânot to punish me, but to prove the strength of the faith Heâs been building in me.
Just like Job, maybe God is saying:
âHave you considered my daughter Rylan? Even in loss, she worships. Even in fear, she trusts. Even in disappointment, she doesn't walk away from Me.â
If youâre reading this and feel like youâre under fire too, let me say this clearly:
Youâre not being punished. Youâre being proven.
This may be one of the hardest battles youâll ever fight, but itâs also where God is forging unshakable faith in you.
đ A Prayer for the Tested and Tired
Father, I donât understand why this is happening, but I choose to trust You. If this is a Job season, give me Jobâs perseverance. Let me worship while I wait. I surrender the things I canât control, and I lay down my striving. Remind me that You rule over every Leviathan in my life. Refine me, anchor me, and keep me close to You. Even when the enemy comes against me, let him see me still standing, still praising, still Yours. In Jesusâ name, Amen.
đȘ Reflection Questions
What are the âLeviathansâ in your life right nowâthings that feel too big or wild to control?
Have you felt like youâre being tested? How can you shift from fear to trust in this season?
What would it look like to stop wrestlingâand start resting in Godâs sovereignty?
â€ïž You Are Not Alone
If you're feeling like life is spinning out of control and you're barely holding on, I want you to know: I see you. I'm with you. And God is still for you.
I don't have all the answers yet. I'm still in the middle of this. But I know this much: God is here. He is holy in the heartbreak, sovereign in the silence, and good even when life doesnât feel good.
And if Heâs allowing this test, itâs because He already knowsâyou wonât turn from Him. Youâll come out stronger, refined like gold, and testimony in hand.
