š When the Battle Feels Bigger Than You ā But Not Bigger Than God
A Devotional Inspired by Job 41
By Rylan Isabella Wicker
Recently, I stared at my husbandās paycheck in disbelief. It was barely half of what it should have beenāand the bills werenāt going to wait. I had already lost my own job, and though I stepped out in faith to start a business, Iām not seeing income yet. I've been applying for work, praying, pressing forward... but every door feels closed.
In the middle of that heartbreak and confusion, God led me to Job 41.
At first, I didnāt understand. This chapter describes a terrifying creature called Leviathanāfire-breathing, untamable, and unstoppable. It sounds like something out of a fantasy novel. But as I prayed, I realized: Leviathan is a picture of everything Iām facing right now.
The fear.
The financial pressure.
The uncertainty.
The sense that something dark and wild is trying to swallow my peace.
And I heard something deeperāsomething holyābeneath the noise:
āYouāre not fighting this beast alone. In fact, you donāt have to fight it at all. Iām still God over it.ā
š¬ What Job 41 Teaches Us:
Some battles are bigger than usāand thatās okay.
God doesnāt expect us to be stronger than the storm. He reminds us that He already is.God is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us.
Leviathan may look terrifying to us, but to God? He commands it. Controls it. Crushed it beforeāand can do it again. This isnāt the end of the story.
In Job 42, God restores everything Job lost and more. This suffering has an expiration dateāand a redemptive purpose.
š„ Am I Being Tested?
Someone recently said to me, āMaybe God is allowing all this warfare to test your faithābecause He knows you wonāt turn away.ā
At first, that was hard to hear. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized: maybe theyāre right. Maybe God has allowed this seasonānot to punish me, but to prove the strength of the faith Heās been building in me.
Just like Job, maybe God is saying:
āHave you considered my daughter Rylan? Even in loss, she worships. Even in fear, she trusts. Even in disappointment, she doesn't walk away from Me.ā
If youāre reading this and feel like youāre under fire too, let me say this clearly:
Youāre not being punished. Youāre being proven.
This may be one of the hardest battles youāll ever fight, but itās also where God is forging unshakable faith in you.
š A Prayer for the Tested and Tired
Father, I donāt understand why this is happening, but I choose to trust You. If this is a Job season, give me Jobās perseverance. Let me worship while I wait. I surrender the things I canāt control, and I lay down my striving. Remind me that You rule over every Leviathan in my life. Refine me, anchor me, and keep me close to You. Even when the enemy comes against me, let him see me still standing, still praising, still Yours. In Jesusā name, Amen.
šŖ Reflection Questions
What are the āLeviathansā in your life right nowāthings that feel too big or wild to control?
Have you felt like youāre being tested? How can you shift from fear to trust in this season?
What would it look like to stop wrestlingāand start resting in Godās sovereignty?
ā¤ļø You Are Not Alone
If you're feeling like life is spinning out of control and you're barely holding on, I want you to know: I see you. I'm with you. And God is still for you.
I don't have all the answers yet. I'm still in the middle of this. But I know this much: God is here. He is holy in the heartbreak, sovereign in the silence, and good even when life doesnāt feel good.
And if Heās allowing this test, itās because He already knowsāyou wonāt turn from Him. Youāll come out stronger, refined like gold, and testimony in hand.
